Let's get Donegal back working - Written by Joe McHugh
I entered politics because I believe that politics is a tremendously effective instrument of change. Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Town Council, and Buncrana Town Council play massively significant roles in our local economy. The result of the June local elections will shape our local economy for the next 5 years.
Donegal will only get back working, fishing, and building if there is renewal at Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Town Council, and at Buncrana Town Council.
Improve Donegal's workforce
- Donegal workers must upskill - let's remove bureaucracy and integrate training services at LYIT, FAS, Donegal VEC, County Enterprise Board, Teagasc into a one-stop training shop for Donegal workers
Get Donegal back fishing
- 1 job at sea creates 7 jobs on land (processing, delivery, etc)
- Donegal County Council must become a voice for the small boat sector (under 12 metres)
- Marine and Angling Tourism
- Let's capitalise on our aquaculture resources (oysters, mussels, scallops)
Get Donegal back building
- A focused Donegal County Council can secure the EU funding needed for the Derry-Letterkenny-Sligo rail project, which will create hundreds of building jobs and develop first-world infrastructure
- Cockhill Bridge in Buncrana must be upgraded. Let's bridge Lough Swilly. Let's have climbing lanes on the Letterkenny-Derry road.
- These projects will create hundreds of jobs
- Let's improve our schools, local authority housing, and our hospitals
Donegal needs tourism!
- Fine Gael in power in your local government will secure the Lough Foyle & Lough Swilly ferry services, which are vital for North-West tourism
- Open up our old railway lines for cycling and walking tourism
- Ambitious water tourism projects on Lough Foyle, Lough Swilly, and off our Atlantic coast
- Hill-climbing
A safer Donegal
- Fine Gael in power in your local government will secure greater Garda resources along Donegal's Foyle coast
- Donegal County Council must push for greater cooperation between An Garda Síochána and the PSNI through rigorous implementation of the Patten Report
I am honoured to serve as the new Fine Gael TD for Donegal North-East. I am very proud of the Fine Gael team that is contesting the local government elections in this area. I ask you to give them your support.
