Cllr. John Ryan was elected to Donegal County Council on June 5th 2009, when he received 1,331 first preference votes. Cllr. Ryan's election was a victory for the Inishowen Fine Gael organisation, and won back the seat formerly held for the party by the late Cllr. Jim Sheridan (dec., 2004).

John (44) is originally from Fahan and now lives at Burnfoot with his wife Siobhan and their three children, Michael, Sara and Eimear. John was educated at Buncrana NS, Rockwell College (Co. Tipperary), Royal & Prior College (Raphoe), Gurteen Agricultural College (Sligo), and Magee University (Derry).

John graduated from Magee with a Business degree in 1995. John is a prominent Inishowen businessman, and has operated Ryan Milk Produce since 1985. The Inishowen company delivers Milk to 1,300 homes and businesses in the area that stretches from Buncrana to Letterkenny taking in Fahan, Inch, Burnfoot, Bridgend, Burt, Newtown, Killea, Carrigans, St Johnston and Manorcunningham.

John has also been involved in the pub business, and currently owns the “Carmans Inn” (Muff). Previously he has run the “Foot Inn” (Burnfoot) and the Central Hotel in Buncrana. The Fine Gael Councillor was born into a farming family, and John and his son Michael operate a small part-time farm at Burnfoot. John is active in his local community, and is a member of Burt GAA Club.

John wants Donegal County Council to create a local infrastructural environment that will enable national government to ‘sell’ Donegal as a commercial venue to prospective international.

He told the Inishowen FG convention: “National government is about negotiating with companies who want to invest in Ireland; Donegal County Council is about creating an environment that will attract these companies to set up factories and businesses in Donegal.”

In 2009 Cllr. John Ryan campaigned for a mandate to:

  • Create a Donegal environment capable of attracting and sustaining jobs
  • Improve Inishowen’s road and ferry transport infrastructure
  • Remove the bureaucracy that is hampering Inishowen’s fishing industry
  • Direct more resources to providing police security in Inishowen If elected to Donegal County Council
