Member of Letterkenny Town Council
Cllr. Jimmy Kavanagh was elected to Letterkenny Town Council for the first time in June 2009, when he secured the third of the nine Town Council seats in the local elections. Cllr. Kavanagh secured 460 votes on the first count, and narrowly missed out on electing a party colleague to the Town Council. Mr. Paddy Gildea (FG) missed out on the last seat by 8 votes.
In the days after the election Cllr. Kavanagh was instrumental in bringing together the five non-Fianna Fáil members of Letterkenny Town Council, and developing an arrangement which will see control of the Town Council pass from Fianna Fáil for the first time in many years.
Jimmy is married to Róisín (nee McConnell) and has two daughters Michelle and Leah. He works as a Staff Officer at Letterkenny General Hospital.
Jimmy was educated at St.Eunan’s College, Letterkenny Institute of Technology, The Irish Management Institute (IMI) and The Institute of Public Administration (IPA). He graduated from the IPA with a degree in Health Administration. The IPA is a college of the National University of Ireland (NUI).
Jimmy is a prominent community activist in Letterkenny and is credited with founding the Kidney Dialysis Fundraising Committee, which provides Renal Services at Letterkenny General Hospital. He also founded the ‘Saturday Winter Soccer League’, which is now part of the Donegal League. He is a popular local quiz master and to-date his quizzes have raised €250,000 for local charities.
Jimmy was a playing member of local soccer and football clubs for many years, and he is a past manager of Iona FC schoolboys’ team. Today he is a keen follower of both games. His nephew Rory is currently captain of the Donegal Senior Football team.
Cllr. Kavanagh is a voice on Letterkenny Town Council for:
- The preservation of Letterkenny’s Green Areas
- Addressing the Town’s traffic Issues for both motorists and pedestrians
- The introduction of cycle lanes in Letterkenny
- The introduction of a Town Council scholarship scheme for third level education
- The designation a Town Council official to deal with residents associations
- The assignment of a designated Council official to deal with complaints from the public
- The support of ALL initiatives that create jobs and industry in Letterkenny
