Cllr. Mickey Doherty was first elected to Donegal County Council on June 5th 2009, when he received 1660 votes from his base on the east of the peninsula. Cllr. Doherty received very high levels of support in his home areas of Muff, Quigley's Point, Redcastle, Moville, and Greencastle.
 
 
Mickey was born in Leitrim, Gleneely. He was educated at St.Ultan’s NS (Gleneely) and at Carndonagh Boys College. Today he lives at Quigley’s Point with his wife Marian. Their five grown-up children live in Inishowen.
 
Cllr. Doherty was Managing Director of a successful Inishowen Civil Engineering Company, Michael Doherty & Sons Construction Ltd. Today he shares the responsibility of managing that company with his sons Barry and Noel.
 
Cllr. Doherty has been a prominent community activist for 30 years. As Chairperson of Quigley’s Point Community Centre Ltd he was involved in developing Quigley’s Point Community Centre and Bocan Community Playgroup. He is:

Cllr. Doherty led Joe McHugh TD’s 2007 general election campaign in his local area, and he has been an active supporter of Cllr. Bernard McGuinness for many years. At the 2009 Inishowen Fine Gael convention Mr. Doherty told party delegates that, if elected, he “will be a man on the ground who will work on local issues and feed Joe McHugh with the energy that he needs to put Donegal North-East back on the map”.
 
In 2008 his contributions to his community and to charity were acknowledged when he was awarded as Donegal Person of the Year.
